About the courses

Welcome, future ukulele player!

Thank you for your interest in my ukulele courses. You can read a short introduction about me on my blogger profile. Please read the course descriptions below so you can choose the level that best matches your experience.

If a particular course is not currently scheduled, you can contact me about future dates without any commitment.

I built these courses around my own teaching method and more than 35 years of learning and making music. The groups are intentionally small so I can pay attention to every participant. My aim is to make the day practical, enjoyable and musical, while giving you enough structure to continue learning effectively at home.

Previous participants are also welcome to repeat a course, refresh their knowledge, meet other ukulele players and make music together.

Before registering, also consider whether you will have the time and energy to practise afterwards. The course becomes genuinely useful when the information from the day is turned into real skill through regular practice.

Ukulele Course I for complete beginners

This course is designed for complete beginners. You do not need any previous musical training or knowledge of chords or music theory. We start from the very beginning: how to hold and tune the ukulele, how notes and chords work, and how to produce a clean sound.

Chords and rhythm are the other major themes. We work interactively with practical examples and songs, with the aim of becoming comfortable with the basic chords C, Am, F and G and with fundamental strumming patterns.

I do not promise that anyone will “learn the ukulele” in a single day. Even an accessible instrument takes time and practice. What I do promise is a solid starting point, useful information, practical knowledge and, I hope, an enjoyable musical experience that helps you build an effective practice routine at home.

Complete beginners should arrive with fingernails as short as reasonably possible on the fretting hand, as long nails can make clean chord shapes unnecessarily difficult.

Ukulele Course II for beginners with some experience and returning players

This course follows Ukulele Course I, but you can also join without having attended the first course if the topics below match your current level. It is aimed at beginners with some experience and returning players who already know a few basic chords (C, Am, F and G), perhaps one or two more, and would like to expand their chord vocabulary and understand the logic behind chords.

We also cover transposition and learn additional strumming and picking techniques.

Part of the day is devoted to ear training, listening skills and musical awareness, presented through practical, playful exercises and musical challenges.

No two players arrive with exactly the same experience, so some parts may already be familiar to you. If you can instantly find and play any chord, understand modal scales and harmony, transpose in your sleep and play anything by ear, this course will probably be too elementary. If most of that still sounds new, you are very welcome to join us.

Ukulele Course III

This course continues from Ukulele Course II, but attendance at the previous course is not required if the topics below suit your current level.

It is intended for players who are already familiar with barre chords, are comfortable changing chords and would like to deepen their skills through many practical examples. We revisit barre chords, work with blues, explore different accompaniment patterns and try improvisation. We also introduce some new chord types, including augmented and diminished chords.

We cover the foundations of fingerstyle playing and the basic technique of creating fingerstyle arrangements: how to combine chord tones with the melody so that the instrument can carry both accompaniment and tune.

As in Course II, ear training and musical listening are developed through practical exercises.

No two players have exactly the same background, so some parts of the material may already be familiar to you.
