Nemzeti dal
For 15 March, Hungary's national day commemorating the 1848 Revolution, we are going to learn the chords to Nemzeti dal (“National Song”).
Petőfi wrote the poem on 13 March 1848, two days before the revolution began, originally for a public meeting planned by the young people of Pest for 19 March. News of the revolution in Vienna, however, accelerated events. On the 15th he first read the poem aloud in Pest at the Pilvax Café.
Together with the Twelve Points, Nemzeti dal was among the first works printed by the newly free press at the occupied Landerer printing house. Petőfi had actually forgotten to bring the poem with him and dictated it from memory. Several thousand copies were distributed among the people.
According to tradition, Petőfi stood on the steps of the Hungarian National Museum and recited Nemzeti dal to the assembled crowd. In his own recollections, however, Petőfi does not mention the museum among the places where he recited the poem; he probably gave a speech there, and the image of him reciting the poem on the museum steps seems to have emerged later in collective memory. From Wikipedia's article on the Hungarian cockade I learnedthat the version shown in the corner of the video is the correct one. I had previously thought that the red stripe of the flag should be on the outside, but apparently not.
Because the poem was set to music, the lyrics are rearranged slightly compared with Petőfi's original text. The passage beginning “A magyarok istenére...” (“By the God of the Hungarians...”) appears at the end of every stanza in the poem, but in the musical version it functions as a chorus and is sung twice after every second stanza. No text is lost; it is simply reordered.
