Kai KCI-100M
In this blog post I would like to introduce a concert-size ukulele from the Kai brand. A characteristic feature of Kai instruments is an extra soundhole on the side of the ukulele, facing upward toward the player's face while playing. I still cannot decide whether it is mainly a design feature or whether it genuinely makes the instrument louder , but in any case it is interesting to be able to look inside the ukulele body from that angle as well.
In appearance this Kai follows an absolutely traditional, even conservative line: it is made of mahogany and has no decoration at all. Its beauty lies in its simplicity. What you cannot necessarily tell just by looking is that the soundboard is solid mahogany, which is an excellent feature. It has a beautiful finish that does not really show in the factory photo. When I first strummed it, I immediately noticed its lovely bright, sparkling tone. New strings obviously contribute to that, but the choice of wood—and perhaps the additional soundhole—also plays a role. It comes with one factory-fitted strap button and a good-quality soft case. Enjoy this short demonstration video of the Kai KCI-100M.
