It has been quite a while since I wrote an instrument-review blog post, so it was time for one. A beautiful Kala ukulele has been staying with me—and will stay . I will explain why in the near future. I am still memorizing the model designation because the manufacturer gave it quite a long string of letters. SMH stands for solid mahogany, TG for tenor, and CE for cutaway + electro-acoustic construction.

I probably do not even need to say that this is a premium-category ukulele: every part of it is beautifully made and flawless. I have only one small reservation: it has no strap buttons, so I will have those installed afterwards. Apart from that, it is one of the best—if not the best—ukuleles I have ever tried. It is very similar to my blue Lanikai, but its body is slightly narrower and it has one more fret on the fingerboard, which is very useful in one or two songs.

When I first picked it up, I spent ages simply admiring it, because the finish on the solid mahogany body looks spectacular. Then, once I started playing it, I could not stop—and my enthusiasm for the instrument has continued ever since . I made a demonstration video about it; enjoy!
