Build Me Up Buttercup
I will soon be back with another tutorial video of my own, but in the meantime I would like to share one of my favourite YouTube videos. It features a charming and inventive arrangement of Build Me Up Buttercup. The song was made world-famous by The Foundations in 1968; since then it has been covered by a number of performers and has also appeared as a song in films. Although it sounds deceptively simple, the composer packed it with a great many chords that follow one another in clever ways, creating a genuinely uplifting song.
Of course tastes differ, and many people do not like this song. If there is enough interest, I will make a tutorial video for it as well. In the meantime, sharp-eyed players can work out a few chords by watching the girl's fingers. It is interesting that she frets C major with her little finger several times; this makes sense because of the chords immediately before and after the C, making the change more comfortable. You can also see that there are many rapid chord changes in this song, so anyone who wants to learn to play (accompany) it on the ukulele will need to practise carefully so that the fingers arrive on the correct strings and frets in time.
