Chords 17: G7
Just when a beginner finally starts to believe that nothing could be worse than the finger-twisting horrors of G major, they see G7 and realize that yes, something can. Of course it is not really that terrible either. As I always say, it is a matter of practice. A good way to exercise the fingers is to practice alternating between G major and G7. The two chords are related and often appear in the same song, but their fingerings are completely different: not one finger stays in the same place. Jumping between them therefore gives both your brain and your hand a proper workout. Written numerically, G7 is 0212.


If we imagine the fingers in G major forming a small triangle pointing forward, then G7 is its exact mirror image: the triangle points backward. In the following video I show you exactly what I mean:
